Composition:
- Carbon: 0.90-1.20%
- Chromium: 1.00-1.60%
- Silicon: 0.10-0.35%
- Manganese: 0.30-0.75%
- Sulfur (max): 0.050%
- Phosphorus (max): 0.050%
Applications:
- EN31 steel is commonly used for forged pipes in various industrial applications.
- Typical uses include taps, gauges, swaging dies, ejector pins, and ball and roller bearings.

Forging Process:

Heat slowly to 1000-1050C for forging.
Ensure thorough soaking at the forging temperature.
Reheat as needed to maintain a temperature above 850C.

Heat Treatment:

Annealing: EN31 is usually supplied in the annealed and machineable condition. Re-annealing is necessary only if the steel has been forged or hardened.
- Heat to 800-810C, soak well, and allow to cool in the furnace.
Stress Relieving: Beneficial before hardening, especially for heavily machined parts.
- Heat carefully to 700C, soak well, and cool in air.
Hardening: Heat to 800-820C, soak thoroughly, and quench in oil.
Tempering: Temper between 150C and 300C, adjusting based on tool requirements.
